Maintenance Tips for Healthy, Beautiful Nails

Stop cutting your cuticles-

For the people who are actually doing it, I know, quitting the habit can be quite difficult, but what you should know is that every time you bite or pull them off, you expose your nail bed to bacteria that could enter very easily. This is because your skin is cut wide open. A painful infection is the last thing you need. If you are truly concerned about your cuticles, you can push them back gently. I believe there are even cuticle pushers for sale out there, perfect for that kind of job.

Water is life-

This saying is very true, especially with regards to your nails. It is important to drink lots and lots of water to keep your body (as well as your fingernails) hydrated. This is important because it keeps your nails from becoming dry and from breaking. It is as simple as that.

Protect your nails-

Many people are not aware that they frequently do things that risk damaging their fingernails. Like doing the dishes, or trying to pry open bottled drinks. You should realize that your nail is not a tool for such activities, and wear protective gloves when doing any house chores. This will go a long way in ensuring that your nails don’t break so easily.

Use a base coat and a top coat when applying nail polish-

This is important for a number of reasons. The base coat acts as a nail hardener to keep your nails strong, and it also prevents the discolouration that sometimes comes when you apply nail polish. After applying the base coat, apply the nail polish, and then the top coat. This seals in the nail polish, ensuring that your manicure or pedicure last longer, and has a glowing shine. I personally don’t like seeing my nail polish chipping off after one week of application, because then I’d be forced to remove it and apply a fresh coat all over again. This brings me to my next tip.

Be careful which nail polish remover you use-

Some nail polish removers contain up to 100% of acetone in them. Try as much as possible not to go for these types of nail polish removers. They could leave your nails dry and brittle, which could lead to breaking. Go for non-acetone polish removers that will inflict minimal damage to your fingernails.

Cut or trim your nails regularly-

This is probably the most basic tip in caring for your nails. It is important to keep them at the same length and shape. This is true even for the people that are actually trying to grow out their nails. Yes, it is possible to grow them long while still trimming them from time to time Also, when cutting your nails, try to avoid cutting the edges into a box shape, but try to cut them in a rounder shape; this reduces the chances of them breaking. If you are not too keen on nail cutters or nail clippers, you can file your nails to the desired length. Just make sure that you file the nails in one general direction so that they don’t become weak.

Keep your nails moisturized-

After having your manicure of washing your hands, make sure that you apply moisturizing lotion to your hands, fingers as well as cuticle lotion to your cuticles. This is important to keep them soft, and prevent breaking. The more you do so, the better your nails will be. As nail expert Cathy Crispo says, “Apply cuticle oil and hand lotion every night.”

When you are getting that manicure or pedicure and you’re not sure what colour or style to choose, just remember to choose something that you are most comfortable with and like the most. Your manicurist will always have a wide selection for you to choose from so take your time and select what you feel goes best with your style.

Hopefully these few tips will now set you on the path to achieving those great looking nails that you have always wanted. Try them out today.
